Hanja (한자) - Chinese Characters in Korean¶
What is Hanja?¶
Hanja (한자) are Chinese characters used in Korean. Although modern Korean primarily uses Hangul, approximately 60-70% of Korean vocabulary has Chinese origins.
Why Learn Hanja?¶
1. Vocabulary understanding: - Distinguish homophones: 수도 (首都 capital / 水道 waterworks) - Understand word formation - Expand vocabulary efficiently - Etymology and word relationships

How Hanja Works in Korean¶
Three types of Korean words:
- Pure Korean (순우리말): 하늘, 사랑, 나라
- Sino-Korean (한자어): 학교 (學校), 사회 (社會)
- Loanwords (외래어): 컴퓨터, 버스
