Body Part Idioms¶
Eyes (눈)¶
눈이 높다 - Have high standards (eyes are high)
저 사람은 눈이 높아서 결혼을 못 해요.
That person can't get married because they're too picky.
눈이 낮다 - Have low standards 눈이 없다 - Have no eye/taste for something
눈에 띄다 - Stand out, catch one's eye
그 학생이 눈에 띄어요.
That student stands out.
눈 밖에 나다 - Fall out of favor (be out of sight)
선생님 눈 밖에 났어요.
I fell out of favor with the teacher.
눈을 붙이다 - Take a nap (attach eyes = close eyes)
잠깐 눈 좀 붙일게요.
I'll take a quick nap.
눈(을) 감아주다 - Let something slide, overlook
이번에는 눈 감아줄게.
I'll let it slide this time.
Ears (귀)¶
귀가 얇다 - Easily influenced (ears are thin)
귀가 얇아서 남의 말을 잘 믿어요.
Being easily influenced, (they) believe others easily.
귀가 밝다 - Have good hearing / be well-informed 귀가 어둡다 - Hard of hearing
귀에 못이 박히다 - Hear something repeatedly (nail in ear)
귀에 못이 박히도록 들었어요.
I've heard it so many times my ears have calluses.
귀를 기울이다 - Listen carefully (tilt ears)
학생들의 의견에 귀를 기울여야 해요.
We should listen carefully to students' opinions.
Hands (손)¶
손이 크다 - Cook generous portions (hands are big)
우리 엄마는 손이 커서 음식이 항상 많아요.
My mom cooks generous portions, so there's always lots of food.
손이 작다 - Cook small portions
손(을) 떼다 - Stop doing something, wash hands of
그 일에서 손 떼세요.
Stop doing that. / Stay out of it.
손(을) 쓰다 - Take action, use means
다른 방법으로 손을 써 봤어요.
I tried taking action another way.
손에 익다 - Become skilled at, familiar with
이 일이 손에 익었어요.
I've become skilled at this work.
손(이) 가다 - Require effort/work
이 요리는 손이 많이 가요.
This dish requires a lot of work.
Feet (발)¶
발이 넓다 - Well-connected (feet are wide)
그 사람은 발이 넓어서 모르는 사람이 없어요.
That person is so well-connected, there's no one they don't know.
발이 좁다 - Have few connections
발(을) 끊다 - Stop visiting/going
술집에 발을 끊었어요.
I stopped going to bars.
발(이) 묶이다 - Be tied down, unable to leave
비 때문에 발이 묶였어요.
I'm stuck here because of the rain.
발(을) 빼다 - Back out, withdraw
그 계획에서 발을 뺐어요.
I backed out of that plan.
Head/Mind (머리)¶
머리가 좋다 - Smart, intelligent 머리가 나쁘다 - Not smart
머리를 쓰다 - Use one's brain, think
좀 더 머리를 써 봐요.
Think harder. / Use your brain.
머리를 짜다 - Rack one's brain
해결책을 찾으려고 머리를 짰어요.
I racked my brain trying to find a solution.
머리가 크다 - Be grown up (head is big)
머리 큰 사람이 그런 행동을 하면 안 돼요.
A grown person shouldn't behave like that.
머리(가) 아프다 - Be bothersome, troublesome
생각만 해도 머리 아파요.
Just thinking about it is troublesome.
Mouth (입)¶
입이 무겁다 - Keep secrets well (mouth is heavy)
걱정 마세요. 저는 입이 무거워요.
Don't worry. I can keep a secret.
입이 가볍다 - Can't keep secrets (mouth is light)
입(이) 떨어지다 - Be amazed, mouth-dropping
그 경치에 입이 떨어졌어요.
I was amazed by that scenery.
입에 맞다 - Suit one's taste
이 음식이 입에 안 맞아요.
This food doesn't suit my taste.
입이 싸다 - Talk too much, gossip
그 사람은 입이 싸서 비밀을 못 지켜요.
That person talks too much and can't keep secrets.
Face (얼굴)¶
얼굴이 두껍다 - Shameless (face is thick)
얼굴이 두꺼워서 뭐든지 할 수 있어요.
Being shameless, (they) can do anything.
얼굴이 넓다 - Know many people
얼굴에 쓰여 있다 - Written on one's face (obvious)
거짓말하지 마. 얼굴에 다 쓰여 있어.
Don't lie. It's written all over your face.
Heart (마음)¶
마음(이) 넓다 - Generous, open-minded 마음(이) 좁다 - Narrow-minded
마음을 먹다 - Make up one's mind
마음만 먹으면 할 수 있어요.
If you make up your mind, you can do it.
마음에 들다 - Like, be pleased with
이 옷이 마음에 들어요.
I like these clothes.
마음을 놓다 - Feel relieved
이제 마음을 놓았어요.
Now I feel relieved.
