Quick Reference

Pattern Usage Certainty Level Example
-ㄴ/는/ㄹ 것 같다 General speculation Medium 비가 올 것 같아요
-ㄴ/나 보다 Inference from evidence Higher 비가 오나 봐요
-ㄹ지도 모르다 Possibility/uncertainty Lower 비가 올지도 몰라요

-ㄴ/는/ㄹ 것 같다 (It seems like...)

Formation

Descriptive verbs & past tense: - Add -ㄴ after vowel stems: 크다 → 큰 것 같다 - Add -은 after consonant stems: 작다 → 작은 것 같다 - Past: -았/었던 것 같다

Action verbs (present): - Add -는: 가다 → 가는 것 같다

Future: - Add -ㄹ/을: 가다 → 갈 것 같다

Noun + 인 것 같다

Usage

General speculation based on feelings, thoughts, or weak evidence:

Examples:

That person seems to be a student.

Common Patterns

Negative:

안 좋은 것 같아요. (descriptor negative)
안 가는 것 같아요. (action verb negative)

-ㄴ/나 보다 (It appears to be...)

Formation

Descriptive verbs: - Add -ㄴ after vowel stems: 크다 → 큰가 보다 - Add -은 after consonant stems: 작다 → 작은가 보다

Action verbs: - Add -나: 가다 → 가나 보다

Past tense: - -았/었나 보다: 갔나 보다

Noun + 인가 보다

Usage

Inference based on observed evidence or strong reasoning. Implies you've noticed something that leads you to this conclusion:

The lights are on. (They) must be home.

Key Difference from -ㄹ 것 같다

-ㄴ/나 보다 = Evidence-based inference -ㄹ 것 같다 = General feeling/opinion

배가 고픈가 봐요. (I hear stomach growling → inference)
배가 고픈 것 같아요. (I feel hungry → feeling)

-ㄹ지도 모르다 (Might be...)

Formation

All verbs: - Add -ㄹ after vowel stems: 가다 → 갈지도 모르다 - Add -을 after consonant stems: 먹다 → 먹을지도 모르다

Past possibility: - -았/었을지도 모르다: 갔을지도 모르다

Noun + 일지도 모르다

Usage

Express uncertainty or possibility. Less confident than -ㄹ 것 같다:

Examples:

내일 눈이 올지도 몰라요.
It might snow tomorrow. (low certainty)

그 사람이 올지도 몰라요.
That person might come.

길을 잘못 찾았을지도 몰라요.
We might have taken the wrong way.

사고가 났을지도 모릅니다.
There might have been an accident.

Shortened Form

-ㄹ지 몰라(요) (more casual):

늦을지 몰라요.
(I) might be late.

Usage Context

Often used when: - Expressing worry or concern - Suggesting alternative possibilities - Hedging statements to sound less certain

Certainty Spectrum

From most to least certain:

  1. -ㄴ/나 보다 (evidence-based) → "clearly appears to be"
  2. -ㄹ 것 같다 (general feeling) → "I think/seems"
  3. -ㄹ지도 모르다 (possibility) → "might be"

Answer Key

Exercise 1: 1. 올 것 같아요 / 오나 봐요 (both work, depending on evidence) 2. 울 것 같아요 3. 나 봐요 4. 일 것 같아요 / 일지도 몰라요 5. 나 봐요

Common Mistakes

1. Using -나 보다 without evidence:

❌ 그냥 그럴 것 같아요. → 그럴 나 봐요.
✓ 그럴 것 같아요. (just a feeling, no evidence)

2. Wrong tense with -는 것 같다:

❌ 어제 갈 것 같아요. (future form for past)
✓ 어제 간 것 같아요. (past form)

3. Confusing action vs. descriptive verb forms:

❌ 바쁘나 봐요. (descriptive verb with action verb ending)
✓ 바쁜가 봐요.

Natural Usage Tips

  1. Add 좀 for softening: 좀 어려운 것 같아요
  2. Combine with question endings for tentativeness: 갈 것 같은데요?
  3. Use in negative for polite disagreement: 그건 아닌 것 같아요
  4. Stack for extreme uncertainty: 갈 것 같을지도 몰라요

Cultural Note

Koreans use these patterns constantly to avoid being too direct or certain. Using definitive statements can sound: - Arrogant (too confident) - Rude (too direct) - Awkward (socially inappropriate)

Practice hedging your statements with these patterns to sound more natural and culturally appropriate.
