Basic Introduction Pattern¶

저는...입니다¶

The fundamental pattern for introducing yourself.

Structure: 저는 + [noun] + 입니다

저 = I (humble form)
는 = topic particle
입니다 = to be (formal)

Examples: - 저는 학생입니다. (I am a student.) - 저는 의사입니다. (I am a doctor.) - 저는 한국 사람입니다. (I am Korean.)

Informal Variations¶

Polite informal: 저는...이에요/예요
저는 학생이에요. (I'm a student.)
Casual: 나는/난...이야/야
나는 학생이야. (I'm a student.)

Introducing Your Name¶

Formal: 제 이름은...입니다¶

제 = my (저의 contracted)

Examples: - 제 이름은 김민수입니다. (My name is Kim Minsu.) - 제 이름은 사라입니다. (My name is Sarah.)

Alternative Patterns¶

저는 [이름](이)라고 합니다

More natural in speech, means "I am called..."

Examples: - 저는 민수라고 합니다. (I'm called Minsu.) - 저는 존이라고 합니다. (I'm called John.)

Note: Use 이라고 after consonants, 라고 after vowels.

Asking Someone's Name¶

이름이 뭐예요? (What's your name? - casual polite)
성함이 어떻게 되세요? (What's your name? - honorific)

Stating Your Age¶

저는...살입니다¶

살 = years old (counter)

Examples: - 저는 스물다섯 살입니다. (I'm 25 years old.) - 저는 서른 살입니다. (I'm 30 years old.)

Age in Korean¶

Use native Korean numbers for age:

스무 살 (20)
스물한 살 (21)
스물다섯 살 (25)
서른 살 (30)
마흔 살 (40)

Asking Someone's Age¶

몇 살이에요? (How old are you? - casual)
연세가 어떻게 되세요? (How old are you? - honorific)

Note: Age questions can be sensitive; consider context.

Stating Nationality¶

Structure: [country] + 사람 + 입니다

Expressing Pleasure in Meeting¶

만나서 반갑습니다¶

"Nice to meet you" - said when meeting someone for the first time.

Variations by formality: - Formal: 만나서 반갑습니다 - Polite: 만나서 반가워요 - Casual: 만나서 반가워

Example dialogue: - A: 저는 김민수입니다. 만나서 반갑습니다. - B: 저는 이지은입니다. 저도 반갑습니다.

잘 부탁합니다¶

"Please treat me well" - often said after introductions, especially in work contexts.

Example: - 앞으로 잘 부탁합니다. (Please treat me well going forward.)

Informal (Friends)¶

Practice¶

Introduce yourself with your name using the formal pattern.
How do you say "I'm a student" formally?
