Past Tense Formation

Korean past tense is formed by adding 았/었 to the verb stem, following the same vowel harmony rules as present tense.

Basic Rules

Step 1: Remove 다 from dictionary form Step 2: Apply vowel harmony - Bright vowels (ㅏ, ㅗ) + - Dark vowels (all others) + Step 3: Add 어요 for informal polite or 습니다 for formal polite

Understanding Contractions

When the stem ends in ㅏ or ㅗ, contractions occur:

하다 Verbs

하다 verbs use a special pattern: 하 + 였 → 했

Formal Polite Past Tense (았/었습니다)

Simply replace 어요 with 습니다.

Irregular Verbs in Past Tense

ㄷ Irregular

ㄷ changes to ㄹ before 었.

Process for 듣다: 1. Stem: 듣 2. ㄷ → ㄹ before vowel: 들 3. Add 었어요: 들었어요

ㅂ Irregular

ㅂ changes to 우 before 었.

Process for 춥다: 1. Stem: 춥 2. ㅂ → 우: 추우 3. Dark vowel → 었: 추웠어요

ㅡ Irregular

ㅡ drops before 았/었.

Process for 쓰다: 1. Stem: 쓰 2. ㅡ drops: 쓰 → ㅆ 3. Add 었어요: 썼어요

ㄹ Irregular

ㄹ remains in past tense (only drops before ㄴ, ㅂ, ㅅ in other forms).

ㅅ Irregular

ㅅ drops when followed by a vowel.

Special Verbs

이다 (to be)

The copula 이다 has unique past tense forms:

Note: After a vowel, 이에요 → 예요, and 이었어요 → 였어요

있다/없다 (to exist/to not exist)

  1. 오늘 아침 7시에 일어났어요. (I woke up at 7 AM this morning.)
  2. 샤워를 했어요. (I took a shower.)
  3. 커피를 마셨어요. (I drank coffee.)
  4. 8시에 학교에 갔어요. (I went to school at 8.)
  5. 수업을 들었어요. (I attended class.)
